Skin in Gujranwala specifically
Gujranwala sits squarely in the smog belt and shares Lahore's winter pattern, usually within a few points of it on any given day.
Humidity here runs higher than Lahore and closer to Sialkot, which pushes presentations toward congestion rather than the pure dryness and stinging seen further south. Industrial activity adds particulate load outside the crop burning months, so the clean spring window is shorter than people expect.
The practical advice for this zone applies almost unchanged, with one addition: if you are breaking out rather than stinging, treat it as blocked follicles from particulates rather than reaching for stronger acne products.

What this zone does to skin
This is the highest particulate load in the country, and it is seasonal rather than constant. From late October to February, PM2.5 across these cities regularly sits in the unhealthy band and stays there for weeks.
Particles at 2.5 micrometres are small enough to penetrate the skin rather than rest on top of it. Once there they generate reactive oxygen species, which damage the lipids holding your skin barrier together. The barrier then leaks water outward and lets irritants inward, which is why skin here becomes reactive in November without anything in the routine changing.
Pollutants of this kind also activate pigmentation pathways and work alongside UVA, so melasma and post-acne marks that were stable through summer commonly darken across the smog season.
The three things that stack
Particulates. Discussed above, and the one everybody knows about.
Hard water. Most of this region has hard tap water. Dissolved minerals leave a residue, raise skin pH and make every cleanser more stripping than its formulation intends. A cleanser that suits someone in a soft water city behaves differently on the same face here.
The humidity collapse. Monsoon humidity falls away within a few weeks. Skin that held water comfortably in August loses it far faster by November, and almost nobody adjusts for it.
Three separate barrier insults arriving together is why this region produces so much sudden sensitivity, and why people conclude they have developed sensitive skin when they have a temporary, repairable problem.
What actually helps
- Cleanse every evening without exception. Gentle, non-foaming, thirty seconds. The single highest value habit of the season, because it removes what is sitting on the skin before it spends the night there
- Support the barrier rather than treating it. Ceramides, glycerin, panthenol, squalane. Consistency matters more than price
- Antioxidants in the morning. Vitamin C if tolerated, niacinamide if not. The damage mechanism is oxidative, so this works on the pathway rather than the symptom
- Sunscreen daily, including on grey days. UVA passes through haze. Smog reduces visible brightness far more than it reduces UVA, so the days that feel least sunny are not the days with least pigmentation risk
- Stop exfoliating acids while levels are high. A stripped barrier plus a heavy particulate load is the combination that produces the worst flares
- Lukewarm water only. Hot showers dissolve surface lipids, and everybody showers hotter in winter
Notice that four of the six are about doing less. In this zone, restraint outperforms addition.
What to expect through the season
Skin usually turns in the last week of October and settles again in late February. Barrier repair takes four to eight weeks, so the sensible approach is to simplify the routine before the season rather than reacting in December.
Pigmentation will not improve during these months. Holding ground is the realistic goal, and that depends almost entirely on daily sun protection.
